A WASHINGTON POST AND CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

One town. Two families. A secret that changes everything.

In Bonhomie, Ohio, a stolen moment of passion, sparked in the exuberant aftermath of the Allied victory in Europe, binds Cal Jenkins, a man wounded not in war but by his inability to serve in it, to Margaret Salt, a woman trying to obscure her past. Cal’s wife, Becky, has a spiritual gift: She is a seer who can conjure the dead, helping families connect with those they’ve lost. Margaret’s husband, Felix, is serving on a Navy cargo ship, out of harm’s way—until a telegram suggests that the unthinkable might have happened.

Later, as the country reconstructs in the postwar boom, a secret grows in Bonhomie—but nothing stays buried forever in a small town. Against the backdrop of some of the most transformative decades in modern America, the consequences of that long-ago encounter ripple through the next generation of both families, compelling them to reexamine who they thought they were and what the future might hold.

Sweeping yet intimate, rich with piercing observation and the warmth that comes from profound understanding of the human spirit, Buckeye captures the universal longing for love and for goodness.

I loved each of the characters so much! The hurt and sadness that they all carried was so prevalent and made it so hard to be upset at any of them for the choices they made. Skip’s story brought me to tears. I will carry these characters for the time to come.

Good but the pace towards the finish was off. Also. Too many unclosed plots.

This book broke my heart and mostly put it back together again. Every character is written as if they are the main character. As the reader, I loved them all, even as they hurt each other with their imperfections.

I love Jenna’s book suggestions, and this one didn’t disappoint. I liked that there were not a lot of characters and I felt I really got to know them. I loved picking up the book and continue reading wherever I was. I recommend this book.

A little history. A little romance. A little steamy. A little silly. A LOT of great writing.

I read at least 1 book every couple of weeks and I enjoyed this “old-fashioned book “ more than I have read in a couple years.

Beautifully written, captivating story, a little bit too sad for me and the characters were all so slow to take action when needed. It was frustrating that all had this reluctance. Margaret! Not reason enough!

I don’t understand the rave reviews as I found it tedious. After trying for a full month to get deeply involved in the story I am putting it aside unfinished.

A really good read. Intertwining lives of some folks who live in a small fictional town in Ohio. Spanning about 60 years from childhoods in the 1920’s through early older adulthood in the 1980’s. Full of love and heartbreak.
