“Kept me frantically turning the pages and somehow made me cry at the end . . . Brava!”—Kristin Hannah, author of The Women

“Melds tense suspense with a powerful exploration of devotion, obsession, and love.”—People

1975 is a time of change in America. The Vietnam War is ending. Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier. And in the smalltown of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing.

When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, the most unlikely hero emerges—Patch, a local boy, who saves the girl, and, in doing so, leaves heartache in his wake.

Patch and those who love him soon discover that the line between triumph and tragedy has never been finer. And that their search for answers will lead them to truths that could mean losing one another.

A missing person mystery, a serial killer thriller, a love story, a unique twist on each, Chris Whitaker has written a novel about what lurks in the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope.

I really liked this book but I’m torn between three and four stars because it felt too long sometimes. The characters were complex in a good way but I’m a “I can figure this out fast” type of girl so I kept thinking when will this wrap up??? All in all- a great read.

It’s a beautiful story that is well written. I absolutely loved it. So much depth of character.
  • Dark feel with little to no promise of redemption

I couldn’t finish this book. Stopped halfway through. The storyline is intriguing and thought provoking, but I had a hard time staying engaged. The writing style was not exciting enough to keep me interested and there is such a depressive quality to this book. Yes, there are some victories, but not enough redemption to keep me interested. I’m honestly surprised it’s received such high ratings. Do not recommend reading this book, bummed I spent the money on it.

Patch is a character that lives long after you’ve finished the book.

I’m honestly speechless. The way the author weaves the story of Patch and Saint is pure genius—full of unexpected twists that kept me hooked from start to finish. There’s so much sadness, but also the discovery of love and the thread of hope that carries the characters forward. It’s one of those books I’m truly sad to finish. This one will stay with me for a long time—I loved it.

This book will knock your socks off. So many twists and turns, so intense that I would have to stop reading for a while to come up for air. It brought me to tears at one point and made me furious at another. Not for the faint of heart and probably should have a trigger warning, but an excellent read.
