Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Phileas Fogg is a sensible, well-off man who uncharacteristically accepts a huge bet that he can’t travel around the world in 80 days. Along with his valet Passepartout, Fogg sets about to do the impossible via boats, trains, and even an elephant.

Since its publication in 1872, Around the World remains one of the most famous adventure stories out there. Jules Verne has a gift for weaving entire worlds with words, and in Fogg he’s crated a hero for anyone who’s ever dreamed of leaving their humdrum life behind.

Loved this book! A fascinating time capsule slice of life across the world in 1872. I’d been to many of the places they traveled (India, California etc.) in current times, but found it delightful to hear descriptions of how very different those same places were 150 years earlier, some aspects recognizable yet others very much forgotten. One part of their journey that really struck me was the story of the group leaving CA to head east by train across the US, and encountering elder William Hitch lecturing the train members about Mormonism in the still early days of proselytizing, along with concerns mentioned about the safety because of tensions with native Americans and settlers. Wow. This wasn’t all just random fantasy, this was life back then, mentioned simply as it was happening, and now we have 150 years of progress to look back on and see how it all turned out, see the origin story of many of the places in the world we know only as they are “today”. Unlike journey to the center of the earth and other more sci-fi fantasy books he wrote, this one is very much grounded in every-day reality and the happenings of the day. Definitely my favorite of those I’ve read by Jules Verne.

I don't quite feel enlightened, but I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It reads fast, somehow like a movie.

I have a strong love for Verne. However I haven’t read this book 📖 until 3 days ago when I started. I quickly became in love with it and found it hard to stop reading!! Truly a great author ✍🏽

Verne is one of my favorite authors, and I love around the world in 80 days, but please note this is an abridged version, so unless you want simpler words, there are unabridged copies on here.

The text has been modified from the original. Interesting words have been replaced with dullards.
